Behind the scenes at Earth Sisters

As one of eight children, I grew up making things go round and was taught about caring for your belongings. I was also taught to be conscious of unnecessarily wasting water and electricity. Share, save and reuse was our everyday mantra.

After we adopted our daughter from Fiji in 1995, Fiji became a second home for our family. We returned to the island regularly and lived on the beautiful island for some years. Earth Sisters Fiji has evolved out of our attachment to and love of the Fiji Islands and it is through Earth Sisters Fiji we can bring our mission of sharing, saving, and reusing to the women and girls of the South Pacific Islands.

Women are often left without simple personal hygiene products from living through the hardships of cyclones and floods and these items often get pushed to the least needed end of the shopping list.

I have been inspired by the many people who have stood up for the rights of women over time. Earth Sisters Fiji aims to highlight the basic needs of female sanitary hygiene by providing an eco friendly, economical, comfortable and affordable option without putting an unnecessary strain on the pockets of the families. It’s unfair that so many face this reality just for being born a female.

The hidden truth around disposable sanitary hygiene products and the harmful chemical toxins detected in most brands of these products shocked me when doing further research for this mission. Furthermore, the ecological cost of the plastic waste of disposable sanitary hygiene products often appears to be swept under the carpet.

Studies show a pack of conventional period pads contains the equivalent amount of plastic as 5 shopping bags. (How Much Plastic Is In Period Pads?)

I began prototype samples straight away followed by further research into the best options to bring these products to the South Pacific Islands.

My darling husband of over 40 years Roy is such a wonderful supporter of Earth Sisters Fiji. Roy is a Chartered Accountant and Registered Company Auditor. Accordingly he makes sure Earth Sisters Fiji numbers all add up, the project is headed in the right direction financially and the back office runs smoothly. Love your commitment Roy.

Our good friend Vika who lives in Nadi has been a strong supporter since I first mentioned the project to her. Being a mum of a high school aged girl, Vika also shares our concerns about the future of women’s menstrual hygiene health products and their damaging environmental impact to the Islands of Fiji and other South Pacific Islands.
